New Zealand's living costs are moderate by global standards, but Auckland is noticeably pricier than the rest of the country. The visa funds requirement is a useful planning baseline — though most students spend more in practice.
The funds benchmark
For the Fee Paying Student Visa you must show living funds of NZD $20,000 per year for tertiary study (or NZD $1,667/month for shorter courses), on top of tuition. Confirm the current figure on immigration.govt.nz.
Where your money goes
- Rent is the largest expense, and highest in Auckland. See accommodation.
- Transport — most cities have student public-transport discounts; many students cycle.
- Food — cooking at home is much cheaper; imported goods cost more on islands far from major suppliers.
- Insurance — budget for the compulsory health and travel cover.
- Power and internet if not included in your rent.
Cheaper vs pricier cities
Dunedin, Christchurch, and Hamilton are generally more affordable than Auckland or Wellington, with strong universities and an easier rental market.
Stretching your budget
- Use your term-time work allowance and work full-time over the summer break.
- Flat (house-share) with other students to cut rent and bills.
- Apply for university scholarships early.
