Working in New Zealand as an international student

Many international students can work part-time during study and full-time in the holidays, then move onto the Post Study Work Visa after graduating. The term-time limit increased in late 2025 — make sure you're on the current rule.

Term-time work limits

Eligible students can work up to 25 hours per week during term — increased from 20 on 3 November 2025.
The change also extended in-study work rights to some exchange and one-semester Study Abroad students.
If your visa was issued with the old 20-hour cap, you may need a variation of conditions (a paid application) to move to 25 hours.

Working in the holidays

During scheduled course breaks, eligible students can generally work full-time. Many also work full-time if enrolled in a qualifying master's or doctoral program.

After you graduate — the Post Study Work Visa

The Post Study Work Visa offers up to three years of open work rights depending on your qualification and study length. It's the main pathway from study toward longer-term work and, for some, skilled residence.

Before you start work

Get an IRD number for tax.
Check your visa conditions confirm your right to work and your weekly limit.
Hospitality, retail, and campus jobs are common entry points.
