Pathway Student Visa gets more flexible from July 2026
New Zealand’s Pathway Student Visa (PSV) became more flexible on 20 July 2026. Students can now use it for a wider range of lower-level study, spend longer on English-language preparation, and — for school-leavers moving into tertiary study — change their subject area without applying for a new visa. The changes mainly help students whose plans shift after they arrive.
What changed
Immigration New Zealand made three changes to the Pathway Student Visa, effective Monday 20 July 2026:
- Lower-level study now covered. The PSV can now be used for pathways at New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) levels 1 to 4 — including foundation programmes and vocational certificates, not just higher-level qualifications.
- Longer English-language study. Some first-time PSV holders progressing to NZQCF levels 1–8 can now study English for up to 30 weeks before starting their next qualification, up from the previous 20-week limit.
- More room to change subjects. Year 12 and 13 students moving from school into tertiary study still need to declare an intended subject area, level and provider when they apply. But their visa conditions now specify only the qualification type and education provider — not the discipline. With their provider’s approval, they can change what they’re studying without a new visa application.
Who it affects
- Prospective PSV applicants planning a pathway that starts below degree level, including foundation or vocational-certificate study.
- Students who expect to need more than 20 weeks of English-language preparation before their main course starts.
- Year 12–13 international secondary students transitioning into New Zealand tertiary study who may change their intended field.
What you should do
- If you’re applying for a PSV, still nominate a realistic subject area, level and provider — the declaration requirement hasn’t gone away, even though conditions are less restrictive afterwards.
- If you’re already a PSV holder and want to change discipline, confirm with your education provider first; their approval is required before you switch.
- Factor the extended 30-week English-language allowance into your study plan if you know you’ll need more preparation time before starting a level 1–8 qualification.
