Student life and culture in the US
American university life is famously immersive: the "campus experience" of clubs, sports, and societies is a big part of it. The US is vast and varied, so culture shifts a lot between regions, but a few things hold true everywhere.
Academic style
Expect continuous assessment: frequent assignments, quizzes, class participation, and midterms all count toward your grade alongside the final exam. Professors are generally approachable and hold "office hours", and academic integrity (avoiding plagiarism) is taken very seriously.
Campus culture
- Clubs, societies, fraternities/sororities, and college sports are central to social life.
- Many students live on campus, especially in the first year, building tight-knit communities.
- International student offices run orientation and support programmes, so use them.
Diversity and regions
The US is enormous and regionally diverse: the Northeast, South, Midwest, and West Coast can feel like different countries in climate, pace, and politics. Big cities are highly international; smaller college towns can be quieter and more homogeneous.
Settling in
- Open a US bank account early and start building a credit history.
- Get a Social Security Number if you take on-campus work.
- Tipping (typically 15–20% in restaurants) is an expected part of daily life.
