Bachelor of Science in United States

Bachelor's 4 years Science

The Bachelor of Science is a flexible four-year undergraduate degree that lets students major in a scientific discipline — biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, or mathematics, among others — usually after a broad first year of general education common to US degrees. International students choose the US for this degree because of its research-intensive universities, the option to combine a science major with electives outside the field, and strong pathways into graduate or research study afterwards.

What’s covered

  • A broad first-year “core” spanning sciences, humanities, and social sciences
  • Foundational coursework in the chosen major, building to advanced electives
  • Laboratory work and, at many universities, undergraduate research opportunities
  • Quantitative and analytical methods relevant to the major
  • Options to combine a science major with a minor in another field
  • A senior capstone, thesis, or research project at many institutions

Entry requirements

  • A strong high school transcript, generally including relevant science and maths courses
  • SAT or ACT scores (often optional at many universities)
  • TOEFL or IELTS for non-native English speakers
  • Personal essays and letters of recommendation as part of holistic admissions
  • Demonstrated interest in the sciences through coursework or extracurricular activity
