IRP Renewal Backlogs in Ireland Are Finally Easing
Wait times for Irish Residence Permit (IRP) renewals have been a persistent headache for international students on Stamp 2 permission. Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) says added staff have started cutting those times, with most renewal categories now processed in six to eight weeks and none taking longer than 16. It also confirms a 24-week combined window that should stop most students falling out of status while they wait.
What changed
ISD has assigned additional staff to renewal processing and reports this has begun reducing wait times. For certain categories of renewal, processing now takes approximately six to eight weeks from submission, with ISD stating no category currently exceeds 16 weeks. Processing times still vary with application volume, individual case complexity, and whether extra information is requested.
ISD also restated two standing provisions that, combined, give applicants a 24-week buffer around their IRP expiry date:
- You can submit a renewal application up to 12 weeks before your current IRP card expires.
- If you apply before expiry, you retain the conditions of your previous permission for up to 12 weeks after expiry while the renewal is decided and a new card is issued.
ISD publishes a live, stamp-category breakdown of current processing dates, updated every Monday, and applicants can track their own case through the Immigration Service’s Customer Service Portal.

What hasn’t changed
The renewal process itself is still fully online — there’s no return to in-person renewal appointments.
